The Sun Hydraulics RDBALDN (RDBALDN) is a direct-acting relief cartridge designed to safeguard hydraulic components from pressure spikes. This normally closed, pressure-limiting valve opens to the tank port when inlet pressure reaches the preset level, thereby throttling flow and limiting further pressure increase. It is engineered for smooth and quiet operation, with virtually zero leakage, exceptional dirt tolerance, and resistance to silting. The RDBALDN is highly responsive, with a typical response time of 2 ms. It can handle maximum pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar) and has a capacity of 12 gpm (45 L/min). The valve's construction allows it to be interchangeable with other two-port relief cartridges of the same frame size. This model is suitable for cross-port relief circuits and load-holding applications due to its ability to accept maximum pressure at port 2. Adjustments are made by removing system pressure before tuning the adjust screw, as seals are exposed to system pressure. For optimal performance, users should select a spring range where the desired relief setting falls between midrange and maximum pressure. The valve remains stable across varying oil temperatures and contamination levels. The RDBALDN incorporates Sun's floating style construction, minimizing internal part binding due to installation torque or machining variations. It features EPDM seals for use with phosphate ester fluids but should not be exposed to petroleum-based fluids or greases. The valve's installation requires specific torques: 20-25 lbf ft for the valve itself and 80-90 lbf in for the locknut. Additionally, it includes an internal hex adjustment screw measuring 5/32 inches in size. Overall, this cartridge offers a robust solution for systems requiring rapid response and reliable overpressure protection while maintaining ease of interchangeability within its series.

Direct-acting relief cartridges are normally closed, pressure-limiting valves used to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. When the pressure at the inlet (port 1) reaches the valve setting, the valve starts to open to tank (port 2), throttling flow to limit the pressure rise. These valves are smooth and quiet, essentially zero leak, dirt tolerant, immune to silting and are very fast.

  • All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port relief circuits.
  • The seals on the adjust screw are exposed to system pressure which means this valve can only be adjusted when the pressure is removed. The setting procedure is; check the setting, remove the pressure, adjust the valve, check the new setting.
  • Valve is relatively insensitive to varying oil temperatures and oil borne contamination.
  • Select a spring range where the desired relief setting is approximately mid-range to high between the minimum and maximum pressure to ensure maximum valve repeatability.
  • Suitable for use in load holding applications.
  • Back pressure on the tank port (port 2) is directly additive to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
