The Sun Hydraulics PBJBWHN (PBJBWHN) is a pilot-operated pressure reducing valve designed to manage high primary pressures at the inlet port, reducing them to a constant lower pressure at port 1. This capability allows circuits with varying pressure requirements to operate efficiently using a single pump. The valve is part of the interchangeable three-port pressure reducing and reducing-relieving cartridges, which share the same flow path and cavity for consistent frame sizes. For optimal performance, particularly in mounting configurations, it is advisable to utilize a full capacity return line port 3 with reducing-relieving cartridges. The main stage orifice of the valve is safeguarded by a 150-micron stainless steel screen, ensuring durability and reliability. The PBJBWHN model can handle maximum operating pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar), with specific adjustment ranges tested under different maximum differential pressures: D, E, N, and Q ranges are tested with a differential of up to 2000 psi (140 bar), while A, B, and H ranges can handle up to 3000 psi (210 bar). The C and W ranges are suitable for an inlet pressure of up to 5000 psi (350 bar). The valve features exceptionally flat pressure-flow characteristics with low hysteresis and high stability. However, it should be noted that pilot-operated valves are not fast-acting; for superior dynamic response, direct-acting valves are recommended. The cartridge incorporates Sun's floating style construction to minimize internal part binding due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. It also supports reverse flow from reduced pressure port 1 to inlet port 2 but may require an additional check valve if free reverse flow is needed. The PBJBWHN model includes EPDM seals for systems using phosphate ester fluids but should avoid exposure to petroleum-based substances as they may damage the seals.

Pilot-operated, pressure reducing valves reduce a high primary pressure at the inlet (port 2) to a constant reduced pressure at port 1, allowing circuits with multiple pressure requirements to be operated using a single pump.

  • All three-port pressure reducing and reducing/relieving cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size). When considering mounting configurations, it is sometimes recommended that a full capacity return line (port 3) be used with reducing/relieving cartridges.
  • Full reverse flow from reduced pressure (port 1) to inlet (port 2) may cause the main spool to close. If reverse free flow is required in the circuit, consider adding a separate check valve to the circuit.
  • If pilot flow consumption is critical, consider using direct acting reducing/relieving valves.
  • Main stage orifice is protected by a 150 micron stainless steel screen.
  • Recommended maximum inlet pressure is determined by the adjustment range. Ranges D, E, N, and Q are tested with a 2000 psi (140 bar) maximum differential between inlet and reduced pressure. Ranges A, B, and H are tested with a 3000 psi (210 bar) maximum differential between inlet and reduced pressure. Ranges C and W are tested with 5000 psi (350 bar) of inlet pressure.
