The Sun Hydraulics CWELLFV/AP (CWELLFV/AP) is a vented counterbalance valve with pilot assist, designed to efficiently manage overrunning loads in hydraulic systems. This model features a check valve that allows free flow from port 2 to port 1 while controlling the flow from port 1 to port 2 through a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve. The pilot assist at port 3 effectively reduces the relief valve setting based on the pilot ratio, ensuring precision in pressure control. Importantly, backpressure at port 2 does not influence the valve setting due to its spring chamber being vented through port 4. The CWELLFV/AP is engineered for robust performance with a maximum setting of 6000 psi (420 bar) and a capacity of handling up to 30 gpm (120 L/min). It is designed for easy integration into various hydraulic circuits with its T22A cavity compatibility and standard dimensions allowing interchangeability among similar frame sizes. The construction includes Sun's floating style design which minimizes internal binding caused by installation torque or cavity/cartridge machining variations. This model also boasts high operational reliability; it reseats at over 85% of set pressure and maintains tight sealing between all ports to prevent leakage. The adjustment mechanism is user-friendly, enabling settings modifications by turning clockwise to decrease pressure settings or release load, with full clockwise setting positioned at 200 psi (14 bar). Furthermore, pressure adjustments and system checks can be conducted efficiently due to its accessible internal hex size for adjustment screws and locknuts. Overall, the Sun Hydraulics CWELLFV/AP offers a high-performance solution for controlling hydraulic pressures in applications requiring precise motion control and load handling stability. Its design ensures durability, ease of maintenance, and compatibility across various hydraulic setups, making it a versatile choice for integrating into existing or new systems.

Vented counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio. Backpressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber references the vent (port 4).
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is 200 psi (14 bar).
- All 4-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- Pressure at port 4 is added to the effective relief setting at a rate of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the pressure.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- This valve has positive seals between all ports.
- With vented valves, a lower pilot ratio may be required to achieve machine stability compared to non-vented valves.
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
